Mildura is located in the northwest corner of Victoria, along the scenic Murray River. The area is surrounded by wineries, fruit orchards, producing 80% of the country's dried fruit, and you'll even find Australia's only inland Botanic Garden here.
The name, Mildura, comes from the Aboriginal word for red earth. The area was used for sheep grazing by early settlers but Victoria suffered a severe drought from 1877 to 1884. George Chaffey arrived from California and turned the derelict Mildura Sheep Station into the first irrigation settlement in 1887.
